Context. Contemporary Foreign Performances

Initiated in 2014, the project Context. Contemporary Foreign Performances demonstrated the Golden Mask Festival’s new approach to the selection of foreign productions to be shown in Moscow. Being a Russian theatre festival and the Russian national theatre award, the Golden Mask has always been primarily focused on the trends and the state of domestic theatre. However, it is obvious that Russian theatre cannot exist outside the global cultural context, isolated from the creative, substantive and exploratory quests of the artists across the world. The interaction, influence, adaptations and confluences, the emergence of innovative, original ideas that have never been there before, make the theatrical life more complex, unpredictable and exciting. The global context nourishes and enriches, whilst at the same time being influenced by the Russian theatre.

The aim of initiating the Golden Mask project Context. Contemporary Foreign Performances was to present foreign productions that give an insight to the language and reality of the theatre.

The new approach manifested itself in the programme the Golden Mask presented ATOMOS by Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance company from UK, HOUSE by L-E-V company from Israel choreographed by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, and the three-piece programme REFLECTIONS, WINTERBRANCH, QUINTETT by the LA Dance Project.

In 2015 the project was curated by Valery Zolotukhin, Alena Karas and Anton Flerov.
