THE SONGS OF KOMITAS

Natalia Kasparova’s Dance Company, St. Petersburg
Choreography: Natalia Kasparova

The most terrible event in the life of Komitas, the classic of Armenian music, was the genocide of 1915. His music carries the echoes of those tragic events. Serving as the basis for the dance performance of the Petersburg troupe, this music defines their style, images, theme and plot. The atmosphere of an ancient ritual arises from the lingering and mournful tunes of the duduk. Armenia, her history and dramatic fate, her pain and hope, appear through multi-layered symbols in the slow-moving performance. The directors managed to combine the scale and depth of ancient culture with devices of modern visual theatre. The performance, free from pure ethnography, turned out much closer to the national spirit than many folk dances. Besides, the actors of the dance-company display a good level of technical skills of modern dance.
