OPTIMUS MUNDUS

School of Dramatic Art, Moscow
Director Arseny Eppelbaum
The author of Optimus Mundus (The Best of Worlds), Arseny Eppelbaum, is the son of Ilya Eppelbaum and Maya Krasnopolskaya, the founders of the well-known Moscow Shadow-Theatre (Ten’). This is quite obvious from the production he devised. Just like his parents, he is inventive and mystifying, and offers the spectators not only a game on stage, but also around it. Like Ole-Lukoye he forces adults to lapse with pleasure into childhood. The spectators, divided at the beginning of the performance into four small groups between four actors, can literally rally with the heroes of classical plays – they can drink the poisoned cup intended for Mozart, go to bed with Desdemona and Othello, and almost descend to hell with Don Juan. The main achievement of this performance is that the irony never slips into sarcasm, and parody never seems deliberate. Eppelbaum convinces us that the best of worlds is all the same the theatre.
